Forgiveness

(Benjamin Teixeira) – Eugênia, would you have anything to say about forgiveness?

(Spirit Eugenia) – Forgiveness is a practice of good social living. It is impossible to live happily and harmoniously without it. Every time we hold on to grief, we hinder our own happiness. One is more impatient. Another is hastier. Others keep unrestrained animal passions within themselves. Further on, someone is consumed by greed and ambition. That is: on Earth, no one is free from flaws to be polished by the chisel of evolution. And it is precisely by this reason that the Divine Providence puts flawed people alongside each other, so that they educate themselves reciprocally, by the friction of their psychological and moral projections.

(BT) – What do you suggest to those who find difficult to forgive?

(SE) – That they think of themselves more intelligently. Forgiveness is not something that you give to others, but to yourself. Those who forgive free themselves from the oppression of the unfair enemy. Those who forgive place a balm on the wound that was open in their soul. Those who forgive are given the greatest present: the freedom from the slavery of hatred and resentment, which makes the accuser a god in the person’s life, instead of fighting it off her mind, as intended to do so, unconsciously, after the great injustice they suffered.

(BT) – And what about those who suffered serious insult?

(SE) – One more reason to forgive: so to banish the hell-like presence of hatred from their souls, to forget the images that haunt them. The open wound in their heart is already enough pain, adding more to their self-flagellation of hatred is an even greater injustice that they commit against themselves.

(BT) – And is there anything practical to say about forgiveness?

(SE) – Besides the fact that it is a very practical and irrevocable necessity, as obeying traffic rules, so that you can live in society, I want to remind you that what is often not tolerated in others are aspects of personality that have very important, productive and precious counterparts. For example: people who are irritable, restless and aggressive have a great charge of energy for action, therefore being able to become great achievers. Individuals who are methodical, perfectionist and neurotic with organization, are often better administrators of resources, assets and business, by the fact that they do not overlook details, essential for the management of enterprises. Those who are very jealous can make excellent caretakers of souls, i.e.: heads of schools, hospitals or nursing homes. Those who are very sexual can converge their forces – or at least the surplus of them – for creative practices, such as arts in general, works of political leadership, the activities of writing and public speaking, among others. That is: very often, people moan because some individuals show characteristic signs of highly desirable skills. Thereby rejecting the factory’s waste together with the factory itself, or, as Americans usually say: “throw the baby out with the bathwater”. May they reflect and find, in the exercise of tolerance, one of the mater-keys of happiness and peace, and they will see that being indulgent, rather than being an indication of holiness or virtue, is simply the result of psychological maturity, lucidity and experience.

(BT) – Anything else to say about forgiveness?

(SE) – No, that’s all for today.
